The oldest association in Switzerland. Now with the most modern IT, too.
How the Swiss Book Trade and Publishing Association replaced its outdated server infrastructure with a fully cloud-based Modern Workplace together with Baggenstos.
Customer profile
A fundamental modernization of the IT infrastructure was on the agenda for the Swiss Book Trade and Publishing Association SBVV at the beginning of the year. Under the motto Cloud Only, we implemented the establishment of a modern working environment for the SBVV.
The SBVV was founded in 1849, making it one of the oldest associations in Switzerland. The association represents the interests of the book trade sector vis-à-vis politicians and authorities. It organises and is responsible for basic training, an up-to-date range of industry-specific courses and book promotion abroad.
All Services from the Cloud
The SBVV no longer wanted to use any hardware except for the end devices and therefore decided on the cloud-only approach. In addition, the new solution was to offer maximum security and the management was to be standardized, simplified and taken over by Baggenstos as part of a managed service.
That led to this solution:
- Office applications including email with Office 365
- Fixed network telephony with Microsoft Teams and Swisscom Smart Business Connect
- File storage on teams
- Client management with Microsoft Intune
- ERP is sourced from the cloud by projekt7
- Operation of the infrastructure in the Baggenstos Operation Care Managed Service

Starting point and objectives
The goal for SBVV was to implement a Modern Workplace and eliminate local servers. In addition to the dissatisfaction with the current IT provider, there were these factors to consider before starting the project:
- With support for the host (Hyper-V) ending in 2024, a new solution must be implanted here.
- The virtual servers must be renewed, as support for the Windows Server 2012 r2 previously used by SBVV ends in 2023.
- The end devices (PCs) used are outdated and must be upgraded or replaced with new devices.
- The backup of the servers is still done on tape. This no longer meets modern requirements.

Industry & History
The Swiss Book Trade and Publishing Association (SBVV) was founded in 1849, making it one of the oldest associations in Switzerland. It represents the interests of the book industry vis-à-vis politicians and authorities – a task that is more relevant than ever in the age of digitalisation.
Core Business
The SBVV organises and is responsible for basic training in the book industry, offers an industry-specific range of courses and looks after book promotion abroad. Its members are bookshops and publishers throughout Switzerland.
IT Context
Before the migration, the SBVV ran a local infrastructure with a Hyper-V host and Windows Server 2012 R2 – both past their end of support. The PCs were outdated and backups ran on tape. A small team without a dedicated IT department had to take care of operations on the side.
