Initial situation and objective
Hermann Kuhn AG operates a virtualised server environment based on VMware vSphere; until now, Veeam Backup & Replication was used as the backup solution. The data was first written to a Network Attached Storage (NAS) and copied from there onto tapes. These tapes were each stored off-site.
Solution
To simplify data storage, we implemented a reliable, cost-effective and secure backup solution without tape swapping. The new data backup concept was also designed to fulfil the proven 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of the data (original, NAS, cloud), 2 different media (NAS, cloud), 1 backup off-site. We met these requirements with Veeam Cloud Connect on Microsoft Azure.
Results
Efficient, reliable and cost-effective: To keep the required transfer capacity and storage space as small as possible, only the changed data is transferred after an initial full backup. In addition, only a defined bandwidth is used for the backups during the day, so that operations are not restricted in any way. All data is transferred and stored in encrypted form, so that confidentiality is ensured at all times.
The resources used are billed on a consumption basis via the CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) programme. This ensures that only the resources actually needed on Azure are paid for. If the customer needs more data storage or computing power, these are rented in as required.
Automatic data backup – without tape swapping: With the new disaster recovery and backup solution, data is backed up automatically in the Azure cloud; the time-consuming and error-prone swapping of tapes is no longer necessary. Eliminating the corresponding hardware (tapes, autoloaders) and the maintenance contract has already led to considerable cost savings.
Managed Service as the basis for future success
With the Azure Backup Managed Service, Microsoft's simple and reliable cloud backup is combined with the service of Baggenstos.
Hermann Kuhn thereby reduces the time needed for data recovery, no longer has any problems with the reliability of its data backups, and no longer has to worry about backup tapes.
