As part of the Surber2Azure project, Baggenstos revolutionised the IT infrastructure of Surber Metallbau AG, a traditional and future-oriented family business. Inspired by their guiding principles of 'Courage for visions' and 'Committed to the future', a comprehensive modernisation of the IT infrastructure was carried out.

The project reduced the local infrastructure to a minimum, which enabled optimisation not only in production operations but also at the workstations. The modernisation also included a complete migration of the company software and database to the modern Microsoft cloud solution.

Initial situation and objectives

With the aim of modernising its outdated infrastructure, Surber Metallbau AG opted for a comprehensive migration to the Microsoft Cloud while maintaining regular production operations.

As Surber Metallbau AG does not have its own IT department, it worked closely with Baggenstos to achieve a seamless transition to efficient and advanced IT systems. At the same time, the company attached great importance to maintaining its tradition of high quality while adhering to all standards.

Solution & Implementation

The aim was to minimise and modernise the local infrastructure and, in line with the 'cloud first' approach, to prioritise cloud services. The migration to the cloud at Surber Metallbau AG meant that data, applications and IT processes were moved from local servers to a cloud computing environment, while production continued as normal.

Baggenstos implemented the following measures to achieve this goal and bring the company's IT up to date:

• New hybrid server hardware: The installation of new local server hardware, including Active Directory (AD), file server, application server and backup server. This formed the foundation for a robust and reliable local IT infrastructure for production in the cloud hybrid model.
• Server in Azure: Setting up servers in Azure enabled a flexible and scalable cloud environment for all cloud-ready applications.
• New monitoring: The introduction ensured continuous and efficient monitoring of all IT processes.
• Management of the workstations: The management of the clients by Microsoft Intune, coupled with the introduction of Windows 11 on all 40 workstations, enabled a modern and standardised user experience with Microsoft 365 cloud services.
• Migration of database and business software: Moving an on-premises solution to Azure enabled improved performance and greater security at lower cost.
• Introduction of Microsoft 365: The introduction of Microsoft 365 provides an integrated solution for communication, collaboration and productivity.
• New cloud backup solution: The newly implemented cloud backup solution ensures additional data security. In an emergency, data and apps can be restored more quickly and securely.

Challenges

One challenging task was to carry out the entire migration during ongoing production operations. To ensure that this could continue seamlessly, the critical production systems were operated on site (on-prem) while the majority of the IT infrastructure was moved to the cloud.

The final migration took place on a Friday afternoon within just six hours and without any significant interruptions to operations. By the following Monday, all employees had been successfully migrated, allowing operations to continue smoothly and without major interruptions.

Results

Thanks to the cloud migration, Surber Metallbau AG now has a state-of-the-art IT infrastructure, a remarkable development for a company in the construction and trades sector. The modernisation and relocation to the cloud has optimised the local infrastructure and increased operational efficiency. The company is now equipped for the digital future.
