Cloud first for the law firm. Thouvenin modernises in six months.

Thouvenin Rechtsanwälte, a renowned law firm with a tradition of excellence, decided on a comprehensive IT modernisation and initiated the project. The aim of the project was to create a future-orientated, flexible and agile IT infrastructure based on the cloud-first strategy and seamlessly integrated with the Microsoft Azure Cloud and Microsoft 365.

The transformation, embedded in Baggenstos' 'Modern Work' concept, included the complete migration of the data centre to the Azure Cloud as well as a comprehensive modernisation of the application and device landscape. In addition, Baggenstos' innovative and future-orientated managed service 'Operation Care' was implemented, which includes the out-sourcing of operating services.

Initial situation and objective

Thouvenin Rechtsanwälte's IT infrastructure no longer met the requirements and was five years old. It was no longer optimised to support the firm's targeted growth. The aim was to fundamentally modernise and migrate to the cloud to increase the efficiency and flexibility of the IT systems. The focus was on fulfilling the company's requirements. In addition, solutions were to be found that would promote a long-term partnership and have a future-oriented focus.

Solution & Implementation

Baggenstos implemented several sub-projects, including the creation of an Azure Landing Zone for connecting to the cloud, the migration of email and backend systems and the introduction of new Microsoft security and device management solutions. Below you will find an overview of the implementation:

• Integration in Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure Cloud: A cloud computing platform for the transformation of applications and the replacement of classic file servers, which facilitates the development, provision and management of cloud services. As part of this integration, the entire infrastructure was successfully connected to Azure and the data migration was carried out smoothly.
• Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD): Enabling remote working and efficient implementation of application deployment. AVD also promotes flexible, device-independent working.
• Security: Strengthening identity, cloud and device security to improve the security and compliance of applications and services.
• Modern Work: Focus on improving simplified communication through modern working methods, especially in the area of collaboration, such as sharing and joint editing of documents between employees, but also in collaboration with external clients and partners.

Baggenstos successfully interpreted the requirements of Thouvenin Rechsanwälte and developed a customised service model that relies heavily on Microsoft expertise in key areas.

Challenges

The biggest challenge in the project was to migrate the existing business applications without disrupting day-to-day business, while at the same time operating old and new technologies in parallel. Older industry applications in particular, which were dependent on local file servers, had to be operated locally with a hybrid solution for a transitional period.

Each industry has specific software requirements, and the flexibility to continue supporting legacy systems during the transition phase was critical to a smooth transition. This was mastered through careful planning and implementation. The migration was accompanied by on-site training for employees on 'Modern Work' and the new business applications.

Results

The new IT architecture enables flexible workplace design and faster customisation. The data is secure and easily accessible, which shortens the lead times for further developments.
