Geocloud moves into the Microsoft data center in Switzerland. As one of the first.
How the Swiss GIS specialist migrated to the new Microsoft data center in Switzerland with Baggenstos via lift and shift, optimizing the system architecture to cut costs along the way.
A smooth transition to the Azure cloud
Geocloud was facing extensive renewal work on its data center. This raised the question of moving all of its in-house services to the cloud. Because ESRI, the leading American manufacturer of geographic information systems and a partner of the company, offers its products on the Azure cloud, the choice quickly fell on Azure. Together with Geocloud, we launched the migration to Microsoft's new Swiss data center as part of the early-adopter program. The innovative company's solution went live shortly after the data center opened. Existing on-premises Windows Servers and SQL databases were migrated to Azure (rehost Windows/SQL to Azure).
Geocloud AG
Geocloud AG, founded in 1993 under the name ARIS AG, stands for innovative and intelligent IT services from a secure Swiss cloud. The company has extensive experience in the GIS field and works with its own highly innovative development department.
Daniel Hodel, Managing Director, is very satisfied with how the migration of services to the Azure cloud unfolded:
"Baggenstos enabled us to carry out the switch from our data center to the Azure cloud professionally during this period. We did not yet have the necessary expertise and were able to work together with the Baggenstos team to find ways of running our geodata platform on Azure. Operating such an extensive solution is no easy undertaking. But together with the people at Baggenstos, we found an outstanding solution. Now we can once again focus fully on our managed GIS platform."
Facts and Figures
Starting point and objectives
Geocloud was about to move its services to the Azure cloud. By modernizing the data center and migrating to Microsoft's new Swiss data center, the goal was to achieve both cost savings and better scalability.
Solutions
Using a Lift & Shift Assessment, a standardized procedure, the relocation of the server workloads was examined in terms of profitability and technical requirements. The result was very positive, so nothing stood in the way of the move to the Azure cloud.
Results
Optimizing the system architecture delivered the planned cost savings. A decisive step was the use of a PaaS SQL database on Azure. Geocloud's infrastructure can now be successfully implemented and put into operation in the Swiss Microsoft data center.
